“Love Is a Choice, Not Just a Feeling”

Scripture:
“And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” — Colossians 3:14

Love is one of the most powerful words in Scripture, yet it is also one of the most misunderstood.

We often associate love with how someone makes us feel. We love when things are good, when people treat us well, and when relationships are easy. But biblical love goes much deeper than emotion.

Love is a decision to reflect God’s character even when circumstances are difficult.

Jesus demonstrated a love that was patient with the impatient, compassionate toward the broken, forgiving toward those who caused pain, and merciful toward those who did not deserve it.

That kind of love requires something from us.

Sometimes loving means forgiving when we would rather hold onto the offense. Sometimes it means being kind when someone has not been kind to us. Sometimes it means praying for someone instead of criticizing them. And sometimes loving someone means establishing healthy boundaries while still refusing to allow bitterness to control our hearts.

The Deeper Lesson

We cannot always choose how people treat us, but we can choose what we allow their behavior to produce in us.

Someone else’s anger does not have to become our anger.

Someone else’s bitterness does not have to become our bitterness.

Someone else’s inability to love us does not mean we have to stop loving.

God calls us to love because love changes us before it changes anyone else.

When we choose love, we become less controlled by our emotions and more governed by God’s Spirit.

Ask Yourself

• Am I loving people only when it is convenient?
• Is there someone I need to forgive so that I can love freely again?
• Have I allowed someone else’s actions to change the condition of my heart?
• What would loving like Christ look like in my relationships this week?

Prayer

Lord, teach me to love beyond my feelings. Give me patience when I am frustrated, grace when I am disappointed, and wisdom when relationships become difficult. Remove bitterness from my heart and help me reflect Your love even when it is not returned. Let my life be a testimony of Your grace. Amen.
