“What You Feed Will Grow”
Scripture:
“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” — Matthew 26:41
Temptation is not proof that we have failed God. Temptation is an invitation to make a choice.
Every person encounters temptation. Sometimes it comes through our desires. Sometimes it comes through people. Sometimes it comes through opportunities that appear harmless but slowly pull us away from God’s will.
Temptation often begins quietly.
A thought.
A conversation.
A compromise.
A justification.
A decision we tell ourselves is “not that serious.”
But small compromises can eventually lead us somewhere we never intended to go.
The Deeper Lesson
Overcoming temptation begins before the moment of temptation.
We have to recognize our triggers, understand our weaknesses, and be honest about the things that pull us away from God.
We cannot continually feed something and then pray for it to stop growing.
If we feed anger, anger grows.
If we feed jealousy, jealousy grows.
If we feed negativity, negativity grows.
If we feed unhealthy desires, they become stronger.
But when we feed our spirit through prayer, Scripture, worship, wise relationships, and obedience, we become better equipped to recognize temptation and walk away from it.
Sometimes the most spiritual thing we can say is:
“No.”
No to the conversation.
No to the opportunity.
No to the relationship.
No to the habit.
No to the thought.
No to the environment.
Not because we are better than anyone else, but because we understand what God is calling us to protect.
Temptation Requires Boundaries
We often pray for God to give us strength while continuing to place ourselves in situations that repeatedly weaken us.
Wisdom says:
Don’t just pray for strength—change your position.
If something continually pulls you away from God, you may need to create distance from it.
Ask Yourself
- What repeatedly tempts me to compromise my values?
- What environments make it harder for me to make healthy choices?
- What am I feeding through my thoughts, time, attention, and relationships?
- What boundary do I need to establish?
- Where do I need God’s strength instead of relying on my own?
Prayer
Lord, give me discernment to recognize temptation before it becomes compromise. Strengthen me when I am weak and give me courage to walk away from anything that pulls me outside of Your will. Help me guard my mind, my heart, my relationships, and my choices. May my desire to please You become greater than my desire to satisfy temporary feelings. Amen.
